Season One of Due South ended with Fraser and Vecchio recovering in the hospital from their respective gunshot wounds. Vecchio shot Fraser in the previous episode to protect him from criminal Victoria Metcalf while he was foolishly running to join her on a leaving train. Vecchio was shot in the hospital while attempting to protect Fraser again, this time from a gun-wielding doctor bent on revenge against an intern. After their recovery, Fraser and Vecchio begin a new set of adventures in Season Two.
Constable Benton Fraser in Due South Season Two
Although Fraser continues to be the law-following and polite Mountie from Season One, his character definitely does evolve and change. After discovering Fraser’s humanness in his struggles with Victoria in Season One, Fraser seems less invincible and more readily able to understand the darker side of Chicago life. He struggles to make sense of his willingness to throw everything away he believes in in an attempt to be with Victoria. As he begins to start life again after nearly losing it, there is a different intensity and soberness to his character.
Season Two Storylines on Due South DVD
The storylines in Season Two are also different in some ways to those in Season One. They take on heavier topics and, in some cases, have darker themes. Season One often featured people in trouble and needing assistance from Fraser and Vecchio, but the circumstances were not necessarily dark. In Season Two, the duo deals with darker and, in some cases, more evil criminals. There is also a psychological aspect to Season Two that was absent in Season One.
The storylines in Season Two also push the boundaries of reality a bit more, something that becomes even more apparent in Seasons Three and Four. But because Due South has always had a quirky edge to it as a drama-comedy, the viewer is willing to suspend reality at times and just enjoy the show.
Inspector Meg Thatcher
One significant change is the arrival of Fraser’s new boss at the Canadian consulate, Inspector Meg Thatcher (Camilla Scott). The in-control Mountie is ready to run things as she sees fit and prove herself at her new post. She struggles regularly in her attempts to understand Fraser’s unique ways, leading to much head scratching and exasperation on Thatcher's part. At the same time, Thatcher and Fraser are trying to maintain a professional relationship in spite of their mutual growing attraction throughout the season.
